Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari on Wednesday asked the Delhi government not to charge women in unauthorised colonies for registering property, and to give them ownership rights. He also said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was attempting to create the impression that the Centre was hostile to these colonies.

Asked about the demand, Kejriwal said, “We will look into it.”

Regularisation row

Tiwari alleged that the Delhi government never sent the Centre a proposal to regularise 1,757 unauthorised colonies, and that Kejriwal did nothing to have their boundaries demarcated. Accusing the Chief Minister of trying to take credit for regularisation being done by the Centre, he said Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had written to the Delhi government on the matter again and again.

BJP leader Vijay Goel announced a dharna at Jantar Mantar on Thursday against what he called Kejriwal’s betrayal of the colonies, saying the Delhi government was the biggest obstacle to regularisation. Hans Raj Hans, Parvesh Verma and Ramesh Bidhuri, all BJP MPs, were to join him.

JNU case and buses

At a press conference, Tiwari also accused Kejriwal of protecting “anti-national elements” by withholding sanction to prosecute the accused in the JNU sedition case. The remarks followed a city court’s order, a day earlier, giving Delhi Police two months to secure the necessary sanctions to prosecute Kanhaiya Kumar, a former JNU students’ leader, and others. Police had filed a charge sheet on January 14 against Kumar and others, including former students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, alleging that they led a procession and supported seditious slogans at a campus event on February 9, 2016.

Tiwari further claimed that Kejriwal had not added buses to Delhi’s fleet in nearly five years in office, and had announced 25 new cluster buses only because assembly elections were near. He said the city needs 20,000 buses a day but only 3,500 are running, most in poor shape, and that promised electric buses had not materialised.

What happened next

In the 2020 Delhi assembly election, the Aam Aadmi Party won 62 seats and the BJP 8, and Arvind Kejriwal was Chief Minister after the election.
