Amit Shah to Review Anti-Naxal Operations With Maoist-Hit States on Monday

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will on Monday assess the progress of operations against Naxals and of development schemes in Maoist-affected areas, officials said in New Delhi.
Who will attend
Chief ministers or their representatives, together with senior police and civil officials from 10 states affected by Naxal violence, are expected at the meeting. It will be the first such review since Shah took over the ministry about three months ago. Senior officers of the paramilitary forces and the home ministry will also take part.
A home ministry official said the minister would review both the security operations under way and the development activities in the affected areas.
The 10 states are Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
What the figures show
- Home ministry data show 8,782 cases of Naxal violence in 2009-13, against 4,969 in 2014-18, a fall of 43.4 per cent.
- Deaths, including security personnel, came down from 3,326 to 1,321 between the two periods, a fall of 60.4 per cent.
- Over 2009 to 2018, 1,400 Naxals were killed.
- In the first five months of this year, 310 incidents were recorded across the country, with 88 people killed.
Last month, G Kishan Reddy, the junior home minister, credited consistent government policy with a steady decline in violence and a shrinking area of Left-Wing Extremism (LWE). He said LWE violence was reported from only 60 districts in 2018, and that 10 of those accounted for two-thirds of it. Incidents between April 2014 and May 2019 were 43 per cent fewer than in the preceding five years, he said.
Policy background
The National Policy and Action Plan on LWE, approved in 2015, sets out a strategy covering security, development and the rights of local communities. The government also runs a special central assistance scheme for the worst-hit districts, worth Rs 1,000 crore a year, to fill critical gaps in infrastructure and public services.
