MCD Elections 2017: 54% turnout recorded as AAP alleges faulty EVMs
Voting in the Delhi municipal elections on Sunday ended with a turnout of around 54%. During the day, Aam Aadmi Party convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal complained that some electronic voting machines (EVMs) were faulty.
How the day went
Polling for the Municipal Corporations of Delhi opened slowly at 8am but gathered pace through the day, becoming fairly brisk in the evening once the heat eased. Voting was peaceful. In the 2012 municipal elections, turnout had been 53.23 per cent.
Highs, lows and machines
At a press conference, State Election Commissioner S.K. Srivastava gave ward-level figures:
- Highest turnout: Bakhtawarpur ward in the North corporation, at over 68%
- Lowest turnout: Lado Sarai in South Delhi, at 39%
He said 18 EVMs had been replaced because of problems with batteries or buttons.
