MCD Elections: Over 1.10 lakh first-time voters in Delhi civic polls
More than 1.10 lakh people will be able to vote for the first time in the Delhi municipal elections, Delhi State Election Commissioner S K Srivastava said. Polls to the three corporations, all currently led by the BJP, are due on April 23, and young voters are seen as an important group in the capital.
First-time voters
Srivastava said the exact number of first-time voters is 1,10,639. Of these, 24,825 have only recently turned 18, while the others are 19 or older. He said preparations were on track and that this would be the first civic election since the latest delimitation redrew the ward boundaries.
New ward map
The delimitation was based on the 2011 Census. Each ward now has, on average, about 60,000 residents and roughly 40,000 voters. Delhi has 70 assembly seats. Earlier every assembly constituency contained four wards; after the exercise the number varies from 3 to 7.
Awareness drive
The State Election Commission is running campaigns in newspapers, on radio and on television to persuade people to vote in the election for 272 ward councillors.
