Assembly elections 2017: Uttar Pradesh records 57.03% turnout, Manipur 84%

Voting continued in the 2017 round of Assembly elections. The first phase in Manipur, held on Saturday, recorded a high provisional turnout of 84%, while the sixth phase in Uttar Pradesh saw 57.03% of voters cast their ballots, according to the Election Commission.

Manipur

The Manipur figure was tentative, based on data gathered by 4pm from 72% of polling stations, with the remaining figures still to be compiled. In the 2012 Assembly polls, the constituencies that voted in this phase had recorded a turnout of 72%, so the early figure points to a sharp rise.

Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, the sixth-phase turnout of 57.03% was a little higher than the 55.04% recorded in these constituencies in the 2012 Assembly election and the 54.72% recorded in the 2014 general election.

• Eligible voters: around 1.72 crore
• Men: 94.60 lakh; women: 77.84 lakh
• Candidates in the fray: 635, of whom 63 were women

What happened next

In the Manipur results, the Congress won 28 seats and the BJP 21, and N. Biren Singh became Chief Minister. In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP won 312 seats, the Samajwadi Party 47 and the BSP 19, and Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister.
