Uttarakhand 2017: Congress campaigner list includes leaders denied tickets

The Congress released a list of 40 campaigners for the Uttarakhand Assembly election on Friday, This came after the BJP had announced its own roster of more than 40 star campaigners, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and a number of Union ministers among them. The Congress appeared to take a cautious approach in making its candidates and campaigners public this election season.

Who is on the list

The list is headed by party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi. It also features several leaders from Punjab. According to sources, the party has an eye on Uttarakhand’s Punjabi voters, who are concentrated in Udham Singh Nagar and Dehradun and are also spread across the plains. With that in mind, the party has enlisted Captain Amarinder Singh, who heads the Punjab Congress, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Navjot Singh Sidhu, an ex-BJP lawmaker and recent recruit to the Congress.

Other senior names include:

  • Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ambika Soni and Mukul Wasnik
  • Sushil Kumar Shinde and Jyotiraditya Scindia
  • Jitendra Singh, Manish Tiwari and Kumari Selja
  • Sachin Pilot and Randeep Singh Surjewala

Leaders without tickets

The list also names three senior Uttarakhand figures, Jot Singh Bisht, Rajiv Jain and Mathura Dutt Joshi, none of whom was considered for a ticket this time. State Congress chief Kishore Upadhyay said the list was drawn up taking into account requests from party members and people in various constituencies.
