Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account hacked, abusive posts target Gandhi family

Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account was hijacked on Wednesday evening, and offensive posts mocking the Gandhi family were published from it, angering Congress members and setting off a heated exchange on the platform.

What was posted

The people who manage the Congress vice-president’s account were caught off guard when abusive messages began appearing under his name. Some of the posts were written as if Rahul were criticising himself, while others ridiculed the family, using profanity and insults.

Congress response

The party informed the cyber cell of the Delhi Police and said it would lodge an FIR. Online, Congress supporters accused followers of the BJP of being behind the breach, arguing that Rahul had been singled out because he had repeatedly questioned the government over demonetisation and the Nagrota terror attack. Despite sustained efforts, the party had not regained control of the account by late that night.

Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala condemned the hacking of the account, which he said reflected the insecurities of what he called a prevailing fascist culture. He said such tactics would never silence the “sane voice of reason”.
