Navjot Singh Sidhu, the former cricketer and parliamentarian who recently set up a new outfit, Awaaz-e-Punjab (AEP), wants the Aam Aadmi Party to name its chief ministerial candidate for next year’s Punjab Assembly election straight away, according to sources in AEP.

The sticking point

AAP is reported to have offered Sidhu the post of deputy chief minister if an alliance between the two sides wins. Sidhu, however, has said that AEP needs to know who would be chief minister before it commits to any tie-up.

The negotiations appear to have stalled, with the two parties so far unable to agree on the terms of the proposed alliance.

In the 2017 Punjab Assembly election the Congress won 77 of 117 seats, AAP 20 and the Shiromani Akali Dal 15. Amarinder Singh became Chief Minister.
