Amit Shah claims BJP will win 27 seats in Goa Assembly elections

BJP national president Amit Shah has said his party will form the government in Goa again by winning 27 seats in the coming Assembly election. He was speaking at a meeting of booth-level workers at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, held to launch the BJP’s campaign for the 2017 Goa poll.

The target

Mr Shah recalled that the BJP had won 21 seats in 2012, and asked every worker to leave the meeting committed to a target of 27 seats and a clear majority. He said the party had been re-elected in some states because it practised the politics of performance.

He also stressed that the BJP needed to win all five states going to the polls in order to secure victory nationally in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. He said he was confident Goa would lead that drive by returning the BJP to power for a second consecutive term.

Attack on the Congress

Mr Shah charged that every Congress government in Goa had been corrupt, and urged workers to tell voters that only the BJP’s leadership could give the state clean government. Describing the next six months as crucial for the party and the state, he asked workers to set aside time for party work and take the BJP’s message to every citizen.

Parrikar on surveys

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar took a swipe at pre-poll surveys. “I have come to realise that the results of the surveys are dependent on who has conducted the survey,” he said.

What happened next

In the 2017 Goa Assembly election the Congress won 17 seats, the BJP 13 and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party 3. Manohar Parrikar was Chief Minister after the election.
