BJP names Vijay Rupani Gujarat chief minister, Nitin Patel his deputy
The BJP has chosen Vijay Rupani, its Gujarat state president, as the next chief minister of Gujarat, with senior cabinet minister Nitin Patel to serve as his deputy.
The decision
Union minister Nitin Gadkari announced the choice after a meeting with the party’s MLAs in Gujarat. Mr Rupani, a 61-year-old Jain leader, takes charge at a difficult moment for the party in the state.
The task ahead
The BJP in Gujarat has been dealing with protests and a decline in its popularity. Reviving the party’s fortunes will be the central challenge for the new chief minister, working alongside Mr Patel.
What happened next
In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly election the BJP won 99 seats and the Congress 77. Vijay Rupani was Chief Minister after that election.
