Modi to address three Maharashtra rallies after BJP releases state manifesto

PM Narendra Modi 5F6

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address three rallies in Maharashtra, at Akola, Partur and Panvel, a day after the BJP’s manifesto for the Maharashtra assembly election was released.

The BJP manifesto

The manifesto proposed that Mahatma Phule, Savitribai Phule and Veer Savarkar be given the Bharat Ratna. It also promised one crore jobs and improved healthcare.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis referred to the PMC Bank scam at the launch, saying the state would ask the Centre to help depositors recover their money and that he would personally follow the matter until all of it was returned.

The Congress mocked the document, saying the BJP should have issued a letter of remorse and apology rather than a “Maha-Manifesto”.

Campaign in Haryana

BJP president Amit Shah was due to hold rallies in Faridabad, Panipat, Jhajjar and Gurugram in Haryana the same day.

On Tuesday, at a Haryana campaign meeting, the Prime Minister expressed delight that work on the Kartarpur Corridor was nearly complete, and that there was now an opportunity to correct a political and strategic failure of seven decades ago. He also attacked the Congress over its stand on the Rafale fighter jet deal, saying it turned negative whenever the country was happy.

What happened next

In the 2019 Maharashtra election, the BJP won 105 seats, the Shiv Sena 56, the NCP 54 and the Congress 44; after the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance broke down, Uddhav Thackeray became Chief Minister in November 2019 with NCP and Congress support. In Haryana, the BJP won 40 seats and Manohar Lal Khattar was Chief Minister after the election.
