Owaisi calls Rahul Gandhi a captain who abandoned the Congress ship

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday mocked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, comparing him to a ship’s captain who saves himself instead of his passengers. He made the remarks while campaigning for an AIMIM candidate.

Remarks on Rahul Gandhi

Owaisi said a captain normally makes sure everyone is evacuated when a ship goes down, but Rahul Gandhi had left once he saw the Congress sinking. He added that Muslims had survived not because of the Congress’s mercy over 70 years but because of the Constitution and God’s grace.

His comments referred to the turmoil in the Congress following Rahul Gandhi’s resignation as party president. Former Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam, who had said he would not campaign in the Maharashtra election, had also accused those close to Sonia Gandhi of bias.

Criticism of the government

Owaisi also targeted the Modi government, describing the triple talaq law as being against Muslim women. He demanded that the government extend reservation to Muslims, as it had done for Marathas.

Background

Rahul Gandhi resigned as Congress president in July 2019, and Sonia Gandhi became interim president in August 2019.
