Puducherry CM Narayanasamy Says Centre Flouted Sarkaria Norms on Governors

Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Monday accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of disregarding what the Sarkaria Commission recommended about choosing Governors and Lieutenant Governors.

The allegation

Speaking to reporters after offering prayers at the Manakula Vinayakar temple on Vinayaka Chaturthi, Narayanasamy said the commission had laid down that people who were political functionaries should not be appointed as Governors.

He argued that the choice of the new Governors of Rajasthan, Telangana, Kerala, Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh revealed what he called a political motive on the part of the NDA government, since functionaries of the BJP or the RSS had been chosen. He accused the Centre of going against democratic principles as well as the commission’s advice, and said: “These governors would only function as puppets in the hands of the BJP.”

Background

In the 2016 Puducherry assembly election, the Indian National Congress won 15 seats and the All India N.R. Congress 8, and V. Narayanasamy was Chief Minister after the election.
