BJP Govt Restored Peace in Kairana, Says Muzaffarnagar Riots Accused Minister Suresh Rana

Suresh Rana, an accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots who was recently promoted to cabinet rank in the Uttar Pradesh government, on Wednesday revisited allegations that many Hindu families had been forced to leave Kairana some years ago, during his first visit to his home district of Shamli since the promotion.
What Rana said
Addressing a welcome event in Kairana, Rana suggested that things in the region had changed after Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister. “It is the Yogi government which has restored peace and order here,” he said, describing Kairana as the place people had been made to leave and where traders had been killed in the open.
He said the Chief Minister had approved a power station to ease Shamli’s electricity problems and that several other development projects were in progress.
Rana, who retains the Sugarcane Development portfolio, said he would work hard to justify the responsibility given to him. He was greeted at several roadside meetings and receptions across the district. He represents the Thana Bhawan Assembly seat in Shamli district.
Background
During the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, the late BJP MP Hukum Singh caused a controversy by claiming that Hindus were leaving the region because of lawlessness and the administration’s alleged appeasement of Muslims.
Rana is named in criminal cases connected with the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, in which more than 60 people were killed.
Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in March 2017.
