Jagan Reddy Plans Four Capitals for Andhra Pradesh, Claims BJP MP TG Venkatesh

The debate over moving Andhra Pradesh’s capital away from Amaravati gathered pace on Sunday after BJP MP TG Venkatesh claimed that Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy intends to declare four capitals for the state and has already informed the Centre.
The claim
Speaking at an event in Kurnool on Sunday, Venkatesh said Reddy was considering capitals at Vizianagaram, Kakinada, Guntur and Kadapa so that development could be spread across every region of the state. According to him, the Centre has been told that Amaravati would lose its status as the capital.
The claim comes amid a running dispute pitting the ruling YSR Congress Party against the TDP over building the new capital.
Venkatesh said the BJP had earlier asked Reddy to make Amaravati a free zone for development and to decentralise power, with industries and IT companies set up in other areas. He added that people in Andhra would welcome the move.
Other remarks
Venkatesh also targeted Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao for letting Godavari water be diverted towards Andhra Pradesh. “Those who go ahead with Chandrasekhar Rao’s plans will get destroyed,” he said.
He warned the state government against halting the Polavaram project, which was conceived when YS Rajasekhar Reddy was chief minister and later taken up by N Chandrababu Naidu when he was chief minister. Stalling it, Venkatesh said, would give the TDP and Naidu a chance to regroup and grow stronger.
Background
The YSR Congress Party won 151 seats in the 2019 Andhra Pradesh assembly election, against 23 for the Telugu Desam Party, and Jagan Mohan Reddy became Chief Minister.
