BJP MLA Gopal Bhargava Accused of Threatening Power Board After Cows Electrocuted in Sagar

BJP leader Gopal Bhargava, the MLA from Rehli, is alleged to have threatened an attack on an electricity board office after a herd of cows died of electrocution in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh.

The alleged threat

Bhargava reportedly warned the board of strong protests and demanded compensation for the owners of the dead cattle. According to a report by the news agency ANI, a video shows him telling officials that stones would be thrown at the board’s building.

The report said the MLA blamed the board for refusing to accept responsibility for what had happened.

How the cows died

The animals were said to have been grazing in a forest area when they were killed. According to reports, the herd walked onto a live wire that had snapped and fallen from the electricity board’s building.

Background

The episode came only days after the state government ordered a magisterial probe into the death of more than a dozen cows at a dairy farm belonging to a BJP leader, where negligence was alleged. Cattle deaths have thus become a political issue in the state, with the BJP MLA now targeting a state-run body over the Sagar incident.
