In 50-Day Report Card, Modi Government Says It Is ‘Walking the Talk’ on Development

The Narendra Modi government presented a report card on Monday marking 50 days of its second term, saying it was already delivering on its promise of rapid development. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar, who released it, said “speed, skill and scale” had been on display and that reforms, welfare and justice were moving faster than in the first term.

The government’s claims

The BJP won 303 seats and Modi took the oath on May 30; it was the first time since 1971 that a sitting government had returned with such a large mandate. Javadekar told reporters that the $5 trillion economy target was backed by a clear plan rather than being a dream, and expressed confidence it would be met on schedule. He said the first 50 days showed the second term would be more effective than the first.

He cited a planned Rs 100 lakh crore investment in roads, railways, ports, airports and other infrastructure, the new Jal Shakti ministry and a mission to ensure assured water supply to every home by 2024. He also pointed to a national research foundation and support for unorganised workers and small and medium enterprises, which he said would create jobs.

Listed achievements

  • Rs 6,000 in assistance to all farmers, and higher minimum support prices for several crops
  • Labour codes, pensions for traders and tax relief for the middle class
  • Scholarships for the children of military and police personnel killed on duty, which Javadekar said was the prime minister’s first decision of the new term
  • Budget measures ranging from help for banks to corporate tax relief
  • Action against economic offenders who fled the country, and a planned bill against ponzi schemes

Javadekar also said the prime minister’s presence on world platforms had increased India’s influence, and that people had seen the slogan of “sabka saath, sabka vikas, aur sabka vishvas” turned into action.
