Tejashwi demands dismissal of Nitish government over Muzaffarpur shelter home case

Tejashwi demands Nitish govt dismissal in Muzaffarpur case

Bihar opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday asked Governor Lalji Tandon to dismiss Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government, alleging its involvement in the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape and murder case after the CBI filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court.

The demand

The Rashtriya Janata Dal leader said the government should be removed with immediate effect for the safety of women and girls, alleging that some ministers had been involved in immoral acts. He repeatedly claimed at election meetings that the state government was involved in the case and had tried to suppress evidence to protect ruling party leaders, including ministers.

The attack came two days before the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls. Saturday was the last day of campaigning for five of Bihar’s 40 seats that vote in that phase.

What the CBI told the court

The CBI informed the Supreme Court that it was investigating accused Brajesh Thakur over the alleged rape and murder of 11 girls at the shelter home he ran in Muzaffarpur. Thakur is already an accused in the sexual abuse of children at the home.

The agency said the names of the 11 girls emerged from statements of victims recorded by its investigating officers and a team from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences. Checking those details, it found that a total of 35 girls with identical or similar names had stayed at the girls’ home at some point. On Friday the CBI told the court it had recovered a bundle of bones from an alleged burial ground, and said a breakthrough had come from a child rescued from the home.

The CBI has faced criticism over delays in charging the accused.
