BJP's Sunny Deol files nomination from Punjab's Gurdaspur in presence of brother Bobby

Actor Sunny Deol, who recently joined the BJP, filed his nomination from Punjab’s Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency on Monday. His brother, actor Bobby Deol, was with him as he submitted his papers.

Temple visits

Earlier in the day, the 62-year-old “Gadar” star visited the Golden Temple in Amritsar and paid obeisance at the Harmandir Sahib, wearing a navy blue turban and a blue shirt. He also prayed at the Durgiana Temple.

The contest

Deol faces sitting MP and Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar, AAP’s Peter Masih and PDA’s Lal Chand. After filing his papers, he was to address a rally in Gurdaspur attended by senior BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal leaders, before leaving for Mumbai to cast his own vote.

Jakhar won the seat in a 2017 by-election held after the death of Vinod Khanna in April that year, defeating BJP candidate Swaran Salaria by a margin of 1,93,219 votes. Khanna, also an actor, had represented Gurdaspur four times, in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014.

Modi’s endorsement

Deol met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. Posting a photograph of the two smiling and shaking hands, Modi praised Deol’s humility and his passion for a better India, said everyone was rooting for his victory in Gurdaspur, and signed off with a line from Deol’s 2001 film Gadar: “Hindustan Zindabad Tha, Hai, Aur Rahega”. In the photograph, Modi wore a yellow kurta with a saffron-and-white scarf, while Deol was in a white shirt and blue jeans.
