Priyanka Gandhi says BJP’s ’70 years’ jibe at Congress has an expiry date

On Tuesday, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stepped up her attack on the Narendra Modi government, telling it to stop blaming earlier Congress-led governments and explain what it had achieved in its own five years in office.
What she said
Speaking in Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh, she said the BJP’s line of asking what the Congress did in 70 years had “an expiry date”, and that the ruling party should now account for its own term. Meeting party leaders there, she asked workers to put in hard work on the ground ahead of the Lok Sabha election and claimed that people were unhappy with the government and would vote it out. Farmers, young people and workers were all dissatisfied, she said.
She also dismissed Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s claim that Uttar Pradesh had made huge strides over the past two years, telling reporters that the report cards sounded good but nothing was visible on the ground and that the people she met every day were in distress. Adityanath had earlier blamed the Congress for the state’s backwardness, saying it had ruled the longest after independence and left Uttar Pradesh labelled a BIMARU state.
The campaign in Uttar Pradesh
Ms Gandhi Vadra, in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, began a three-day Ganga Yatra on Monday, travelling by boat in Prayagraj from Sangam to Arail ghat; the journey was to end in Varanasi. She faces a difficult task in reviving the Congress in a state where its recent national results have been poor. Uttar Pradesh votes in all seven phases of the polls between April 11 and May 19.
What happened next
The BJP won 303 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats in 2019 and the Congress 52; Narendra Modi was sworn in for a second term on 30 May 2019.
