PM Modi to open first phase of Ahmedabad Metro during Gujarat visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to open the first, 6-km phase of the Ahmedabad Metro during his two-day visit to Gujarat. The first trial run on the 6.5 km route had been completed successfully a short while earlier.
Phase II
The Union Cabinet had recently cleared the second phase of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project, and the Prime Minister was to lay its foundation and travel a short distance on the first stretch.
The second phase is made up of two corridors, together 28.254 km long:
- A 22.838 km line linking Motera Stadium and Mahatma Mandir
- A 5.416 km line linking GNLU and GIFT City
The estimated completion cost of Phase II is ₹5,384.17 crore.
Why it matters
The project is meant to provide much-needed additional public transport for Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The second phase aims to ease pressure on the urban transport network of the two cities, which has come under strain from intensive development, a rising number of private vehicles and rapid growth.
