Anna Hazare ends seven-day fast after talks with Devendra Fadnavis

Social activist Anna Hazare ended his seven-day fast on Tuesday evening after nearly six hours of talks with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh also took part in the discussions.

How the fast ended

Once Hazare agreed, Fadnavis asked him to break the fast, and he did so by accepting a glass of sherbet from the chief minister as supporters and villagers cheered.

Fadnavis had travelled from Mumbai to Hazare’s village on Tuesday afternoon for final talks, after which he announced that the demands had been accepted.

The demands

Hazare began his indefinite hunger strike on 30 January with three main demands:

• implementation of the Lokpal at the national level;
• setting up of Lokayuktas in all states; and
• acceptance of farmers’ demands based on the M.S. Swaminathan Commission report.

Fadnavis and Radha Mohan Singh discussed these points in detail with him.

What was agreed

Fadnavis said the process of appointing the Lokpal would begin very soon, and that the Lokpal committee would meet on February 13 in line with the Supreme Court’s directions.

On the Lokayukta in Maharashtra, a joint drafting committee had been formed to prepare a new bill, to be introduced in the state’s budget session later that month. He said the committee would include government representatives as well as people nominated by Hazare.
