AAP announces nationwide agitation over farmers’ rights

The Aam Aadmi Party has announced an agitation across the country on the rights of farmers. The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s national executive that ended late on Sunday night.

What was decided

Alongside the protest plan, the national executive resolved to reproduce the organisational set-up it has in Delhi in every other state. These state units are then expected to lead the campaign on behalf of farmers facing hardship.

According to senior party leader Sanjay Singh, state convenors will begin building the organisation from June 10. The party will then press for two demands: implementation of the Swaminathan committee’s recommendations, and a waiver of farm loans.

The party’s reasoning

Singh said farmers in many parts of the country were taking their own lives, and pointed to protests in Maharashtra during which farmers had destroyed their own produce. He said the national executive had discussed the issue at length and that the agitation would cover states where farmers were in distress, naming Punjab, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra among them.

“Farmers have been committing suicide across the country,” Singh said.
