MCD Election 2017: Congress steps up campaign, to field 90 top leaders

The Congress is stepping up its campaign for the Delhi municipal elections by bringing in 90 senior leaders, according to the party. Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken said leaders such as Jairam Ramesh, Shashi Tharoor, Salman Khurshid and Girija Vyas would join early-morning walks in different parts of the city to talk to residents.

The campaign plan

Maken said the leaders would explain the party’s plans for reviving the municipal corporations and keeping the city clean. He said he had also written to senior Delhi Congress figures, among them former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, asking them to join the campaign.

The list of star campaigners also includes chief ministers of states ruled by the Congress, such as Himachal Pradesh’s Virbhadra Singh and Puducherry’s V Narayanasamy.

First event

According to Maken, the first event would be a visit by Shashi Tharoor, a former Union minister, to the Jahanpanah forest, where he would speak with morning walkers about improving primary education in schools run by the municipal corporations.
