Mayawati dares PM Modi to dissolve Parliament and seek fresh mandate

BSP president Mayawati today challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to call fresh elections so that he could find out what the people really think of demonetisation.

The challenge

Addressing the Prime Minister directly, she said that if he was honest and wanted an accurate survey, then “if you have guts, then dissolve Parliament and hold fresh elections”.

Her comments came a day after the Prime Minister’s Office said that, of the five lakh people who responded to a survey on the Narendra Modi App, over 93 per cent supported the move.

Deadlock in Parliament

Demonetisation has disrupted proceedings in both Houses since the winter session began. Speaking outside Parliament, Ms Mayawati held the BJP responsible, saying all opposition parties wanted the Prime Minister to be present in the House. “The ruling party does not want Parliament to function,” she said.

Background

The demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes was announced on 8 November 2016.
