Bypoll results 2016: BJP wins in MP, Assam, Arunachal; TMC in Bengal, AIADMK in TN

Results were declared today for by-elections to nine Assembly seats and four Lok Sabha seats across six states and one union territory, with the BJP, the Trinamool Congress and the AIADMK all recording wins.

Results by state

  • Madhya Pradesh: the BJP won the Shahdol Lok Sabha seat and the Nepanagar Assembly seat.
  • Assam: the BJP took the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat and the Baithalangso Assembly seat.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: Dasanglu Pul, the candidate of the BJP’s North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), won Hayuliang.
  • West Bengal: the Trinamool Congress held on to both of its Lok Sabha seats, Cooch Behar and Tamluk, and to the Monteswar Assembly seat.
  • Puducherry: Chief Minister V. Narayansamy of the Congress won the Nellithope Assembly seat.
  • Tamil Nadu: the AIADMK won all three Assembly seats.

The demonetisation test

The results were being watched closely for signs of how voters had reacted to the government’s decision to withdraw old banknotes. These were the first polls the BJP faced since announcing demonetisation earlier in the month.

Background

The demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes was announced on 8 November 2016.
