Musharraf Says in Video Clip That Pakistan Trained Kashmiris to Fight Indian Army

Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf has said that Kashmiris were trained in Pakistan to fight the Indian Army in Kashmir, according to an undated interview clip shared on Twitter on Wednesday by Pakistani politician Farhatullah Babar.

What Musharraf said

In the clip, Musharraf says that Kashmiris who came to Pakistan were welcomed as heroes. “We used to train them and support them,” he says, adding that they were regarded as mujahideen who would fight India’s army.

He also says that groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba emerged during this period, and describes militants as having been seen as heroes in Pakistan. In the same remarks he refers to figures such as Osama bin Laden and Jalaluddin Haqqani as having once been regarded as Pakistani heroes.

Context

Pakistan says it does not interfere in Kashmir. The remarks were presented in India as evidence that Pakistan has used militants to stoke tension in the region. India has often accused Pakistan of allowing its territory to be used for terrorism against neighbouring countries.
