Priyanka Gandhi Says Centre Must Admit ‘Historic Slowdown’ in Economy

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday criticised the government over the economy, saying it should accept that there is a “historic slowdown” and start working to resolve it.

What she said

In a post on Twitter written in Hindi, she said that repeating a falsehood many times does not make it true, and that the BJP government should acknowledge the slowdown and take steps to address it.

The slowdown, she said, was visible to everyone. She asked how much longer the government intended to keep going on what she described as headline management rather than tackling the problem.

The context

Her remarks came after GDP growth fell to 5 per cent in the quarter ending June, the weakest figure reported in more than six years.

The comments came a few months into the government’s new term. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, counted on 23 May, the BJP won 303 of 543 seats and the Congress 52, and Narendra Modi was sworn in for a second term on 30 May 2019.
