Priyanka Gandhi’s ‘Mission UP’: Congress Revamp Likely Ahead of 2022 Assembly Polls
The Uttar Pradesh Congress is expected to be overhauled ahead of the 2022 assembly elections, as party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s meetings with workers near completion. The party is trying to recover lost ground in the state.
Meetings and a new team
Since the party’s worst-ever showing in the recent general election, Priyanka has been holding district-by-district meetings with grassroots workers, and a new state Congress team is expected to be announced soon. A senior leader said she had met the senior leadership as well as candidates who lost the Lok Sabha polls, had gathered feedback from district leaders, and that a detailed revival plan would follow shortly.
Several names are already being discussed for the post of state Congress chief, including MLA Ajay Kumar Lallu, Jitin Prasada, Vinod Chaudhary and Lalitesh Pati Tripathi. Senior sources indicated the party might choose a Dalit or a Brahmin for the role this time as part of its positioning before the polls.
Groundwork for the assembly polls
Even before the 2019 Lok Sabha results, the party asked its district chiefs in the state to send booth-level data to headquarters, to be analysed for assembly poll strategy and to strengthen the organisation. Priyanka has also taken up several state issues: the standoff with the state government in Mirzapur over her attempt to meet families of victims of the Sonbhadra massacre, criticism of law and order, and a recent attack on the Adityanath government over the Unnao rape victim’s road accident.
In February, Rahul Gandhi said he had sent Priyanka and Jyotiraditya Scindia to Uttar Pradesh to make the party strong there, adding that after the 2022 elections “there should be a Congress government in the state”.
What happened next
In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly election, the BJP won 255 seats, the Samajwadi Party 111 and the BSP 1. Yogi Adityanath began a second term as Chief Minister in March 2022.
