Priyanka Gandhi Attacks UP Govt on Women’s Safety After FIR Against Chinmayanand

priyanka gandhi 2

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of failing to keep women safe, a day after an FIR was registered against former Union minister and BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand following the disappearance of a student who had accused him of harassment.

The case

Shahjahanpur Superintendent of Police S Chanappa said Chinmayanand had been booked under IPC sections 364, which covers kidnapping or abduction in order to murder, and 506, which covers criminal intimidation. The case was registered on a complaint from the student’s father.

The father had told police that Chinmayanand sexually harassed his daughter. On Tuesday, he alleged that she had gone missing at the instance of the 72-year-old leader, who heads the Mumukshu ashram. She is a postgraduate student at a college run by the ashram. Chinmayanand’s lawyer denied the charge, calling it a “conspiracy” to blackmail him.

What Priyanka Gandhi said

In a tweet with the hashtag #EnoughIsEnough, she said not a day went by in Uttar Pradesh in which the BJP government managed to assure women that they were safe and would get justice.

Sharing a news report on the case, she compared it to the Unnao case. “If a woman complains against a BJP leader, then she is not guaranteed justice,” she wrote, adding that even the woman’s safety was not assured.
