Congress Says Bhagwat’s Reservation Remarks Expose ‘Anti Dalit-Backward Face’ of RSS-BJP

mohan bhagwat1

The Congress on Monday seized on remarks about reservation by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, alleging in New Delhi that they had revealed the “anti Dalit-backward face” of the RSS and the BJP.

What Bhagwat said

A day earlier, Bhagwat had said that people who favour reservation and those who oppose it should hold a conversation in a harmonious atmosphere.

The Congress response

In a series of posts in Hindi on Twitter, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala accused the BJP of attacking the rights of the poor, undermining constitutional rights and taking away the rights of Dalits and backward classes, which he described as the party’s real agenda.

Surjewala alleged that a conspiracy to end reservation for the poor, along with a plan to change the Constitution, had now come into the open. In his view, the RSS chief’s comments showed where the ruling party truly stood on the rights of Dalits and backward classes.

The opposition party’s attack came within a day of Bhagwat’s call for dialogue, with Surjewala using the remarks to frame the issue as a threat to constitutional guarantees for the poor.
