Article 370 to Go as Centre Moves Resolution and Bill to Split J&K

On Monday the Union government put forward a Rajya Sabha resolution to repeal Article 370, under which Jammu and Kashmir has enjoyed special status. Home Minister Amit Shah also introduced a bill to divide the state into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
What was announced
Amid rising tension in Jammu and Kashmir, Shah told the Upper House that Article 370 would stop applying from the date the President gives his assent. The provisions under the article, he said, would no longer be in force once the presidential approval was received.
Reaction in the House
The announcement triggered a massive uproar in the Rajya Sabha, with opposition members sharply criticising the Centre for the decision.
What happened next
Parliament ended Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 on 5-6 August 2019, and the state was reorganised into two union territories.
