Owaisi Is Steering the TRS ‘Car’, Says Telangana BJP Chief K Lakshman

kcr

Telangana BJP president K Lakshman on Wednesday promised to bring Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) rule to an end, saying the BJP was set to take power in the state after the 2023 assembly election. Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad, he accused Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao of running a corrupt government dominated by his family.

Attack on the TRS and AIMIM

Lakshman said the TRS government had not kept its promises and had neglected people’s welfare. He claimed that AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi was the one steering the “car”, the TRS election symbol. According to Lakshman, the Chief Minister did not mark Telangana Liberation Day because he feared Owaisi and the loss of Muslim votes.

“Not observing liberation day is an affront to martyrs’ families,” Lakshman said, adding that the BJP would celebrate the day once it came to power. He also said the TRS would be unable to stop the BJP’s rise even with help from the AIMIM and the Congress.

Claims of growing support

Lakshman pointed to the BJP’s win in four Lok Sabha seats in the state as evidence of its growing presence, as the party celebrated its return to power in neighbouring Karnataka.

He said he had spent a week in the United States, where he met many non-resident Indians from Telangana. According to him, they were drawn to the Narendra Modi government’s policies, wanted to join and strengthen the BJP, and some who had once backed the demand for statehood were now disappointed with Rao’s government and expected the BJP to win the next assembly election.

Lakshman also praised the Modi government for getting Parliament to pass the bill making instant triple talaq a criminal offence, and accused the Congress of trying to block it.

What happened next

In the 2023 Telangana assembly election, the Congress won 64 seats, the BRS 39 and the BJP 8. A. Revanth Reddy of the Congress became Chief Minister.
