Priyanka Gandhi Attacks UP Govt Over Farmer Suicides in Bundelkhand’s Banda

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday criticised the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over the problems facing farmers, and questioned whether its farm and loan waiver schemes were working.

What she said

In a tweet written in Hindi, Priyanka Gandhi cited a media report that five farmers had taken their own lives in as many days in Banda, in the Bundelkhand region. She said farmers grow crops but do not get a price for them, and that no compensation is paid when famine strikes.

The Congress leader, who is the party’s in-charge for eastern Uttar Pradesh, said Bundelkhand’s farmers were being threatened every day with confiscation. She asked what kind of farm policy and loan waiver scheme left farmers with “no option but to commit suicide”.

Background

The government she targeted is led by Yogi Adityanath, who became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in March 2017. In that year’s assembly election, the BJP won 312 seats, the Samajwadi Party 47 and the BSP 19.
