Delhi to have 9,500 buses on its roads by May 2020, says Manish Sisodia

On Thursday, a Delhi Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal cleared the purchase of 1,000 CNG low-floor buses for the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said. He added that the capital would have as many as 9,500 buses on its roads by May 2020.
The plan for the fleet
Delhi currently runs about 5,500 buses, counting both DTC and cluster services. Sisodia said the decisions taken on Thursday, together with earlier ones and those in the pipeline, would add 4,000 buses to the fleet. The first batch would arrive in July 2019 and deliveries would continue until May 2020. The newly approved 1,000 DTC buses are due between January and May 2020. “The Cabinet decisions taken are a major boost for public transport,” he said.
According to a government statement, 1,000 standard-floor cluster buses would begin arriving from July, with all of them delivered by December this year.
Cluster and electric buses
- Low-floor cluster buses: of the 1,000 to be added, the Cabinet approved awarding concessions to the winning bidders for 650, with work to be awarded within 15 days. The tender for the other 350 will be opened on July 19. These buses are to come in batches of 165 a month from December 2019, with the full lot in place by April 2020.
- Electric buses: a tender has been floated for 1,000 electric buses and will be opened on August 2. They are expected on the roads from January 2020, with all of them running by April 2020.
Rajghat coal plant
Sisodia also said the Cabinet had approved a proposal to formally shut the Rajghat coal plant. The 45-acre site will be turned into a solar park with a capacity of 5,000 KW.
