Amit Shah to chair meeting on Goa’s mining crisis; CM Pramod Sawant to attend

UU

Union Home Minister and BJP president Amit Shah was scheduled to chair a meeting in New Delhi on Friday on the crisis in Goa’s mining sector. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also handles the mining portfolio, was to attend.

The meeting

A statement issued in Panaji on Thursday by the Chief Minister’s Office said Sawant would take part in the high-level meeting on Goa mining, which Shah would chair together with Union Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi. The meeting was fixed for 4 pm on Friday. The state’s Advocate General, Devidas Pangam, was also expected to be present.

Why mining matters

Mining in the coastal state has a history of around five decades, but activity came to a halt in March 2018 after the Supreme Court struck down the second renewal granted to 88 iron ore leases.

As Chief Minister, Sawant holds charge of the mining department himself, and the meeting brought together the Union Home and Mines ministers with the state’s top legal officer.
