AAP rules out alliance with JJP for 2019 Haryana Assembly elections

The Aam Aadmi Party will not ally with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, a senior party leader said on Wednesday.

AAP’s decision

AAP leader Gopal Rai said the party’s State unit had been asked to prepare a report on the political situation in Haryana. He told reporters that after reviewing the position following the Lok Sabha elections, the party had decided to fight the coming polls on its own, without any alliance in the State. The Assembly elections in Haryana were due in October 2019.

Lok Sabha results

The two parties had contested all 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana together, with AAP fielding candidates in four and the JJP in six. The BJP won every seat.

About the JJP

The JJP was formed the previous year by Dushyant Chautala, grandson of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, after a power struggle within the Indian National Lok Dal, the State’s main opposition party.

What happened next

In the 2019 Haryana Assembly election, the BJP won 40 seats, the Congress 31 and the JJP 10, and Manohar Lal Khattar was Chief Minister after the election.
