Nand Gopal Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party won Prayagraj South in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election with 93,011 votes (52.53%), defeating Haji Parvej Ahmad of the Samajwadi Party, who polled 64,424 votes (36.38%). The winning margin was 28,587 votes.
