Does holding a voter ID card mean you can vote?

The claim: Holding a voter ID card means you can vote.

Our verdict: False

The right to vote depends on your name being on the electoral roll for that constituency, not on holding a card. A card only helps identify you at the polling station. If your name is not on the roll, the card does not by itself let you vote.

Exceptions and limits

A person disqualified under section 16 of the 1950 Act cannot vote even if listed.
