Voting Rule Fact Checks

Does owning a house in a constituency let you register to vote there?

The claim: Owning a house in a constituency lets you register to vote there.

Our verdict: False

Registration depends on being ordinarily resident in the constituency, and owning or possessing a house there is not enough on its own. An owner who actually lives in the house can register there, because residence is what counts. The ownership is not what qualifies them.

Exceptions and limits

A registered sale deed is listed as accepted address proof on Form 8, so ownership papers can support a claim of residence without replacing the residence test.
