How to Vote: The Voting Process in India

Voting is quick and simple. Here is what to do on polling day so your vote counts in the upcoming elections.

Before polling day

  • Confirm your name in the voter list at electoralsearch.eci.gov.in.
  • Note your polling booth and Part number (on the search result or your voter slip).

On polling day

  1. Carry your Voter ID (EPIC) or an approved alternative photo ID.
  2. Reach your assigned polling booth during polling hours.
  3. The first polling officer verifies your name in the electoral roll.
  4. The second officer inks your finger and issues a slip.
  5. At the EVM, press the blue button next to your chosen candidate.
  6. Confirm your vote on the VVPAT slip shown for seven seconds.

Accepted ID (if not carrying EPIC)

Aadhaar, passport, driving licence, PAN card, MGNREGA job card, bank passbook with photo, or other IDs notified by the Election Commission.
