How the election runs
- Announcement. The Election Commission announces the schedule, and the Model Code of Conduct takes effect immediately.
- Nominations. Candidates file papers, which are scrutinised, with a set date for withdrawal.
- Campaign period. Public campaigning runs until 48 hours before polling closes.
- Silence period. Campaigning stops for the final 48 hours.
- Polling. Voting is held, in phases where the state is large.
